Directions From Gainesville, Florida (and I-10 approaching from the west).
If you are coming from points east, call the Casbah for directions; there's been so much construction in that area I haven't a clue.
- Take Waldo road (SR 24) north to Waldo to the merge with Highway 301. Stick to speed limit like it's the law through Waldo and just after, through a burg called Hampton which you probably won't notice but in which the police will be happy to notice you.
- Continue north on 301 all the way through Starke and Lawtey (watch your speed carefully in both of these towns) to I-10 (about 35 miles)
- Take I-10 east to Jacksonville (about 18 miles).
- Get off on the McDuff Street Exit (#360). Turn right
from the exit ramp. You'll be in a lower income neighborhood.
- You are going to stay on McDuff for a coupleafew miles, it curves around a bit and goes through neighborhoods and you might wonder if you're in the right place. Just keep going! Right off of exit you'll be in a lower income neighboorhood. You'll then go through a couple of traffic lights and railroad tracks. Straight on for a bit and another light, crossing Roosevelt Expressway (firestation on your left).
- Go through light (Chevron station on your right), McDuff then takes a curve to left. You'll pass Robert E. Lee High School on your right. Another light, go straight through and you will now be in edges of higher income neighboorhood.
- Come to a stop sign, you're crossing Riverside Avenue. Straight through. Next stop sign is T into St. John's Avenue. Turn right on St. John's (I think I've got the stop signs right, but just stay on McDuff until you can't go any further and you'll be at St. Johns Ave.).
- Casbah is on St. Johns. You'll go a couple of miles
south through a residential area
on St. John's to the Avondale district (a line of small shops and restaurants); the Casbah Cafe is on the
east side (your left, if you're following these directions) of the street.
- Getting Back is the same as above, in reverse with a couple of minor changes to watch for. McDuff can be kind of hard to catch in the dark. It's just after a sweeping curve with white stone fence (? little columns) on your right, and right before a fairly significant dip in the road. Turn left on McDuff. If you are on St. John's and get to a point where you have to turn hard left because St. Lukes Hospital is right in front of you, you've gone too far. Best to (safely) turn back and find McDuff.
- Follow McDuff all the way back to I-10. Go under I-10 and on ramp is on your left.
- I-10 to Baldwin/301 exit
- 301 to Waldo
- In Waldo, take SR 24 to Gainesville (it's a ramp on the right off of 301, just before 301 goes up an overpass; there's a pretty big sign).
